The Hebrew verb kaneh (קנה) is used when we gain something crucial - a friend, a learning partner, and knowledge of Torah.
Rooted in friendship. Grounded in learning. Guided by Torah.Jews of Color who work for the Jewish community need all three. We need knowledge of the Torah that makes our organizations and programs spiritually inspiring, and the Torah that speaks to our particular experiences. We need trusted colleagues who will collaborate with us and encourage us to grow in our communal leadership. We need peers who will be there for us as advocates and friends in the years to come to sustain our work through challenging and joyous times.
Fellows come away saying “Kaniti - I Have Gained - the Torah, colleagues, and empowerment to feel inspired and sustained in my Jewish communal work.”
Program OutlineIn summer of 2026, our pilot cohort of Kaniti Fellows gathered at Pearlstone Retreat Center for three days of culturally-sustaining Torah learning. They sang lines from Tehilim, meditated in the fashion of the Ben Ish Chai, made art after the tree in Petichat Eliyahu, and collage poetry in the style of Rav Abdallah Hanin’s piyyutim. In between the intensive study, they shared farm-fresh meals, explored the natural mikveh, and built their relationships as a cohort.
Following the retreat, fellows continue to gather for seven monthly online sessions, where the Torah study meets professional development. Each session guides the fellows to consider how the texts and techniques they’re learning might support the organizations they help lead, and sustain them as communal professionals.
Kaniti Serves JOCs in the fieldThis program is for adults, over 21 years old, who identify as Jews of Color and work for Jewish community organizations. This includes staff at synagogues, day schools, community centers, campuses, Jewish advocacy organizations, and more.
We JOCs working in the Jewish communal field can benefit from Kaniti. For more about how Ammud understands the term Jews of Color, see here.

Details About Our Program-
We believe that we, as JOC Jewish communal professionals, deserve to bring our fullest selves to our work. That is a holy goal in itself, and, we know that our cultural experiences and wisdom are assets for the Jewish future - that Jewish communities will flourish when we are free to lead with Torah and ritual practice that speak to the particular experiences of today’s Jewish community.
We recognize that working full-time in Jewish communal settings as a JOC can be challenging. We believe that community, meaningful connection, Torah, and practical learning that can be brought back into one’s work can help make that path smoother—so JOCs are supported in serving the Jewish community with renewed passion, confidence, and purpose.

Kaniti supports both professional and personal growth and we encourage employers to contribute towards the cost at a sliding scale rate. Running Kaniti costs roughly $5,000 per Fellow when accounting for retreat transportation, accommodations, program materials, shared meals, guest faculty stipends, and the staff capacity required to facilitate the experience.
Fellows contribute a portion of the overall cost, with tuition ranging from $500–$1,000, determined on a sliding scale according to the sponsoring organization’s budget. Because Kaniti deepens both professional skills and personal leadership, we invite employers to invest in their staff’s participation whenever possible. We are happy to provide materials to assist with internal requests for funding or professional development approval. Our priority is that finances not stand in the way of anyone who is a Kaniti Fellow.
-
We suggest framing Kaniti as a professional development opportunity that includes a meaningful cohort experience that sustains you in the work and skill building with applications to your current work. Please direct any questions your supervisor may have to Rabbi Sass.
